SIZE GUIDE - COMPLETE BUNDLE
Sizes are a Guide Only!
Canterpants come in three sizes to fit horses and ponies ranging in height between 11hh and 17.2hh.
They are adjustable in height and are designed to be worn loosely fitted. The straps on the Canterpants can be adjusted approximately 10cm in length.
The position of your rug's fittings will impact how the pants sit on the horse, so you should measure your horse with your preferred rug/s to check correct sizing.

Fitting the Belly Band
The Belly Band is simply passed over your horse's back and buckled at the near side elbow. It should not be tight.
We recommend fitting Canterpants under the rug.
Fitting the Chest Buckle
The Chest Buckle is simply clipped over the rug's chest strap as the anchor point for the front buckle of the front Canterpants. Alternatively, you can thread the chest strap through the closed chest buckle.
Fitting the Front Canterpants
After fitting the Belly Band and Chest Buckle, simply clip each front pant leg to the front (chest buckle) and rear (belly band) connection points, close the full length zip and secure the pastern velcro. Adjust the straps to fit your horse.
Fitting the Hind Canterpants
The hind Canterpants are fitted in exactly the same manner as the front Canterpants. The front and rear connection points are at the leg strap D-ring points of a standard rug. Then the zip and velcro are fastened and straps adjusted to fit.
Fitting Canterpants with Attachments Sewn into Rug
If your rug doesn't have the standard D-ring (or similar) leg strap connection points you will need to have them sewn inside your rug to attach the hind Canterpants.
Then simply clip each pant to these connection points in the same manner as above. Ready to sew D Ring assemblies are available for purchase in our shop
Rug Requirements
Check your rug!
Canterpants have been designed based on certain assumptions about your rug. In order to easily attach Canterpants to your rug with the pants, belly band and chest buckle, your rug needs to have the following:
- A chest strap that the Chest Buckle can clip over, or thread onto
- D rings or similar for doing up the leg straps at the back of the rug; and
- D rings or similar where the leg straps are secured to the rug
X Marks the Spot!
Approximate attachment points are shown on the diagram below.
The front leg connection points are achieved with the use of the Chest Buckle and Belly Band, or alternative D ring attachments fitted to the rug.
The hind leg connection points are inherent in a standard rug leg strap fittings. If these do not exist, they will require an alternative D ring attachment to be fitted to the rug.

Solutions for Rug Fittings
Problem 1: My rug doesn't have a standard chest strap
Without a standard chest strap you will not be able to use the Canterpants Chest Buckle for the front connection points.
Here are some alternatives:
- You can sew one or two D rings (or similar) to the chest edge of your rug as the connection point; or
- You can sew a D ring (or similar) the centre of a chest bib to wear under the horse's rug.
Problem 2: My rug doesn't have D Rings for the leg straps
If your rug doesn't have either the front or rear D rings for leg straps, you will need to create connection points for missing connection points by sewing D rings (or similar) to your rug at or near the points indicated in the diagram.
No need to buy a new rug!
If you are missing any one or more of these - we have an alternative solution for you - but you may need to get out the sewing machine; call in a favour with a friend or family member; or take it to your rug repairer. Supply your own connection points, or you can obtain D ring assemblies from our Shop
Caring for Canterpants
To help keep Canterpants looking great and to prolong their use we recommend regular washing. Sweat, dirt and other contaminants can be abrasive to fabric, so removal of these will help protect fabric and prolong wear.
How regular will depend on how much your horse is wearing their Canterpants and how dirty they get, but with constant wear we recommend washing at least weekly.
Ensure all closures (touch tape, zippers and side buckles) are closed before washing.
We recommend the use of a washbag to protect clips and fastenings.
Gentle machine or hand wash in cool water using mild detergent with no brighteners, softeners or bleaches.
Do not tumble dry.
Do not bleach or soak.
